U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Administrator Gregg Cooke praised Monsanto's Luling, Louisiana, facility today at a ceremony marking its participation in EPA's prestigious Environmental Performance Track program.

"I am very proud that Monsanto has joined the Environmental Performance Track program as a charter member. By joining the program, Monsanto committed to do more than is required by law to protect public health and ensure greater protection of our air, water and land. Monsanto is a leader among the new generation of companies who recognize that environmental protection must go hand in hand with economic growth," Cooke said.

Performance Track was designed for those facilities and companies that are already high performers in the area of environmental protection and are willing to do even more. They must meet high standards of past environmental performance, systematically manage their environmental responsibilities, make specific commitments for public outreach, and commit to continued improvement. Monsanto's Luling facility met these high standards. For example, it has reduced energy use and air pollution by revising its processes. As part of its participation in Performance Track, the facility has committed to further reduce its use of hazardous materials and water, and to decrease the amount of solid waste it ships off-site.

Plant Manager Roy Breaud said, "I applaud EPA for developing a program designed to reward top performing organizations. This program shows that EPA and industry can effectively work together to meet our common goal of preserving and protecting our environmental resources."

The facility, located at 12501 River Road, manufactures Roundup(r) herbicide, Acetaminophen analgesic and ACL(r), a water treatment chemical. About 850 employees and 350 contractors are employed at the site.

Monsanto's Luling facility received an Environmental Excellence Award from EPA's Region 6 office in 1998.  It also received the Louisiana Environmental Leadership Governor's Award in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

The Luling facility is one of 228 charter members nationwide. More information about Performance Track is available on the Internet at https://www.epa.gov/performancetrack/.  Monsanto's Performance Track application, which details the company's past achievements and future commitments, is also on EPA's website at https://www.epa.gov/performancetrack/apps/pdfs/A06-0012.pdf.
