BOSTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's New England office is seeking nominations for its 2001 Merit Awards, which recognizes environmental achievement by individuals, businesses, organizations and state and local governments in the six state region.

The awards have been given annually since EPA was created in 1970. Past recipients have included scientists, business representatives, public officials, and other individuals committed to preserving the environment. The deadlines for nominations this year is February 15.

"We welcome nominations of individuals, businesses and non-profit groups whose accomplishments can serve as an example to us all. Each year the Environmental Merit Awards give us a change to celebrate people and organizations who have shown a deep commitment to protecting the public health and environment of New England," said Mindy S. Lubber, regional administrator of EPA's New England office.

Past winners include the Committee for Great Salt Pond on Block Island; International Paper in Jay, Maine; the Vermont Public Interest Research Group; Unilever Home & Personal Care of Clinton, Conn; Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, N.H.; and dozens of individuals from across New England.

An independent EPA panel will select the winners based on the following criteria: promotion of innovative ideas, techniques and/or technologies; ability to address an environmental problem or need; accomplishment of stated goals; ability of the program to be replicated or widely shared; collaboration with others; clarity and effectiveness of the presentation; and long term effects on the environment.

The awards are given in four categories: individual; business, industry, trade or professional organization; local, state or federal government; and environmental, community or non-profit organization.

The awards ceremony will be April 18 at Faneuil Hall in Boston.
