FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., Feb. 1, 2008) - Ron Hammerschmidt, director of the Division of the Environment at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) for 13 years, has been hired to lead the Environmental Services Division for Region 7 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Hammerschmidt, who has a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is a recognized national leader on the environment, having served in every board position including president of the Environmental Council of the States. He worked in a variety of positions at KDHE during nearly 28 years.

"We are delighted to acquire the tremendous knowledge and expertise of Ron Hammerschmidt," said John B. Askew, EPA regional administrator. "The depth and breadth of Ron’s experience, combined with his valuable relationships with state and national environmental leaders, make him a highly valuable addition to the region’s senior leadership team."

Askew noted that Hammerschmidt was one of 25 candidates from throughout the country who responded to the advertisement for the directorship at Region 7.

At EPA, Hammerschmidt’s new role includes supervision of scientists, chemists and engineers who handle field activities, a testing laboratory and technical support.

Hammerschmidt announced his resignation from KDHE this afternoon. He is scheduled to begin his duties at EPA Feb. 19.
