RESURFACING COMPANY AND EMPLOYEES PLEAD GUILTY

On Aug. 29, Child Safe Products Corp. of Hicksville, N.Y.; Child Safe’s President, Ralph L. Guercia of Huntington, N.Y.; and Joseph Guercia, salesman/general manager of Child Safe, all pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn to one count of illegally disposing of hazardous waste. Child Safe Products Corp. supplies and installs safety surfaces for tennis courts and playgrounds. The defendants admitted to abandoning over one hundred 55-gallon drums of waste paint materials containing toluene, benzene and xylene in a stolen trailer that was discovered in New Jersey in 1994. When sentenced, Child Safe faces a maximum time of $500,000. The two other defendants each face maximum sentences of up to five years in prison and fines of up to $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Suffolk County Environmental Crimes Unit.
