EPA Presents Real-Time Ozone Mapping for Dallas-Fort Worth Weather Casts

     The summer of 1999 could be one of our area's worst ozone seasons. Ozone levels have exceeded the federal health-based standards for air quality almost daily for the last few weeks. Viewers are interested in the ozone levels in their neighborhoods and how poor air quality can harm their families.

     The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC) have worked together to make ozone information available to families in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Using real-time data from local TNRCC air monitors, EPA is able to provide maps showing current ozone levels and time-lapse tracking of ozone movement through the area.

     EPA's Regional Administrator Gregg Cooke will present this system to local broadcast meteorologists Thursday afternoon. He will demonstrate the maps available, explain how to provide this service to your viewers, show examples of how this service has been used in other media markets, and answer any questions related to local air quality.
