PHILADELPHIA - The City of Weston, W.Va. is receiving an award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its work in improving the Weston waste water treatment plant.

EPA regional representative Jim Kern will present the most improved plant award to officials and employees at the facility.  The ceremony will be at the Weston waste water treatment plant on at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 10, 1998.

"EPA is proud to recognize the commitment by local officials and plant personnel for maintaining and protecting the nation’s environmental infrastructure.  Using highly effective operation and maintenance practices is essential.  Facilities such as Weston have to meet EPA and state compliance standards and compete for limited federal funding against increasing local competition for capital improvement funds.  Their success has come from training and lots of hard work" said W. Michael McCabe, EPA regional administrator.

Several years ago, the decision to recognize Weston would have been a difficult one for EPA because of a history of problems.  The current design of Weston’s plant creates some problem that no matter how hard they work, cannot be solved.  To remedy this situation, the city has an applied for state revolving loan funds for plant replacement.

"Weston has literally rebuilt its plant.  They have increased their staff, received their licenses, torn apart and rebuilt and modified every piece of equipment they own.
The commitment and effort put forth by the community in cooperation with the EPA/W.Va. operator outreach program is outstanding," said Jim Kern.

"The City and certain individuals have made a commitment to protect the environment.  The effort is highly commendable," said Kern. "It was and is an impressive undertaking."
