(Dallas, Texas – September 5, 2006) The deadline to submit nominations for the Gulf Guardian awards has been extended to Sept. 15, 2006.

Gulf Guardian awards recognize and honor the businesses, community groups, individuals, and agencies taking positive steps to keep the Gulf of Mexico healthy, beautiful and productive. Gulf Guardian award winners exemplify what the Gulf of Mexico program partnership is all about -- innovative solutions from partners pooling resources and looking for creative ways to improve the environmental health of the Gulf in concert with economic development.

Since 2000, awards have been given in six categories: business, civic/non-profit organization, partnerships, youth/education, individual, and government. This year, the program introduced a binational award category to honor U.S/Mexico partnerships. First place winners receive a professional three-minute video about their project or efforts.

The Gulf of Mexico program is a non-regulatory, inclusive partnership providing a broad geographic focus on the major environmental issues in the Gulf. The partnership includes representation from state and local governments, the private sector, federal agencies responsible for natural resource management, the academic community and residents in each of the five Gulf states.
