SAN FRANCISCO –On Thursday, November 17, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will host a public meeting at the Shiprock Chapter House to discuss the designation of the Bonita Peak Mining District as a site on the National Priorities (Superfund) List.  The meeting will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Shiprock Chapter House.

The Bonita Peak Mining District includes Gold King Mine and 47 other historic mines or mining-related areas in southern Colorado. The EPA will discuss how placing the Bonita Peak Mining District on the NPL will help address the environmental impacts of abandoned mines in the district, preliminary cleanup and assessment work in the mining district in 2016, and work planned in 2017. EPA and Navajo Nation EPA staff will be present to speak with residents about on-going work to address abandoned uranium mines throughout Navajo Nation.

Navajo translation will be provided.
