SAN FRANCISCO – Tomorrow, on Thursday, May 12, U.S. EPA Assistant Administrator for the Office of Land and Emergency Management Mathy Stanislaus will join Los Angeles Conservation Corps’ CEO, Wendy Butts, and Deputy Director of Operations, Bo Savage, to observe LACC’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) training course. A group of 25 students from LACC’s Environmental Job Training Program will demonstrate procedures for safely handling hazardous materials and emergency response techniques. For 17 years, LACC has worked with EPA to train unemployed adults in Environmental Justice communities in hazardous waste, asbestos and lead removal.  LACC has trained more than 460 individuals and placed over 80% of those trained in living wage jobs in the environmental field.

Following the HAZWOPER training, Assistant Administrator Stanislaus will hold a press conference to announce the 2016 Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training (EWDJT) grants.

U.S. EPA’s EWDJT grants fund training programs in local communities that provide unemployed and under-employed, including veterans, minority, and predominately low income individuals, with the comprehensive skills, training and certifications needed to enter full-time careers in the environmental field.
