PHILADELPHIA (April 19, 2016) – In preparation for Earth Day on April 22 and in celebration of the spring weather, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today launched its Safer Choice spring cleaning campaign at the Weis Supermarket in Conshohocken, Pa. to encourage consumers to buy home care products that will help protect public health and the environment.

“EPA has developed its new Safer Choice label so that it will be easier for shoppers to choose cleaning and home care products that are safer for families, pets, communities and the environment,” said EPA Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin. “Our Safer Choice program empowers consumers to protect their health and minimize the impact on the environment through everyday purchasing decisions.”

The Safer Choice label is on hundreds of cleaning and home care products -- for most every indoor and outdoor cleaning task -- all-purpose cleaners, kitchen and bath cleansers, carpet and fabric shampoos, laundry detergents, car and boat care products, deck and siding washes, and many more.  The Safer Choice Program has more than 500 partner companies and more than 2,000 products currently qualify to carry the Safer Choice label.

Products that carry this label have been carefully evaluated by EPA scientists to ensure they contain ingredients that are safer for human health and the environment.  EPA chose to promote its Safer Choice campaign in spring when families everywhere are engaged in cleaning activities, but the label applies to products that are used throughout the year.

During today’s announcement, EPA recognized Weis Markets for being a key partner with EPA in promoting sustainable materials management. Along with making a strong commitment to Safer Choice, Weis Markets has been one of the original Food Recovery Challenge partners since the inception of the program in 2012.
