(BOSTON) - The public comment period for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposal to delete the Old Southington Landfill Superfund Site (Site), located in Southington, Connecticut from the National Priorities List (NPL) begins today, July 20, 2018. Deletion of sites from the NPL may occur once all response actions are complete and all cleanup goals have been achieved.

EPA and the State of Connecticut have concluded that all appropriate Superfund-financed responses under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), have been implemented and that no further cleanup by responsible parties is necessary for the Site. Moreover, EPA and the State have determined that cleanup actions conducted at the Site are protective of public health and the environment. However, the responsible parties will continue to perform operation and maintenance activities along with monitoring and EPA will continue to perform Five-Year Reviews. Long-term monitoring and Five-Year Reviews will continue to assure that remedial actions conducted at the site to date continue to be protective of public health and the environment. This deletion does not preclude future actions under Superfund if warranted.

The Federal Docket for the Old Southington Landfill Superfund Site deletion contains the information to support the deletion. The public is invited to comment on the proposed decision to delete this Site from the NPL. The public comment period will begin July 20, 2018, and extend for 30 days to August 20, 2018.
