EPA seal(Lenexa, Kan., April 21, 2017) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 and the Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts are co-hosting a celebration of science and art at Science City in Union Station Saturday, April 22, beginning at noon.

EPA and Paseo Academy asked students to explore the topics of clean air, clean water, and pollution prevention through various art mediums, including musical and performance art. Student paintings, photography, and sculptures will be on display throughout the day.

Beginning at noon, Kansas City radio and television personality Johnny Rowlands will kick off live performances including a choir, 12-person orchestra, dance performances, fashion show, a six-minute play, and poetry readings. Acting EPA Regional Administrator Edward H. Chu will speak at the noon kickoff event. Officials with the city’s KC Green Team Exitwill also be present. Performances will repeat at 1 and 2 p.m.

“Both art and science help us explore and understand the world around us,” Chu said. “Our goal with this event is to inspire youth to explore and interpret science through art. To build on the opportunities of today and solve the environmental challenges of tomorrow, it will take creativity and analytical thinking, which is only possible through great education programs that challenge tradition.”

  • “Autumn Moon,” “Who Knows Where the Wind Blows,” and “African Rain Forest” by the Paseo Academy Choir
  • “Silent Voices” and “United States of Pop” by the Paseo Academy Dance Team
  • Endangered animal-themed fashion show, featuring Paseo Academy student designs
  • “Rain Dance” and “Sunrise/Sunset” by the Paseo Academy Orchestra

Science City at Union Station

Address: 30 West Pershing Road, Kansas City, Mo. (inside Union Station)

Time: Science City is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Performances will be from noon to 2 p.m. Paintings, sculptures, and photography will be on display throughout the day.

Standard admission for Science City and parking rates at Union Station apply. Tickets can be purchased online Exitor at Science City.
