EPA orders asbestos removal from former Muncie foundry
CHICAGO (March 31, 2017) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced a time-critical asbestos removal from the former Frank Foundries site in Muncie, Ind. EPA expects work to begin the week of April 3 and be completed by late summer.
Under the authority of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, or CERCLA, known as the Superfund law, EPA will spend up to $1 million to perform the cleanup. EPA does not expect to register the site on the national Superfund list, which tracks the nation’s most contaminated sites.
Located at 2008 E. Eighth St., the 10-acre foundries site has been used for a variety of industrial purposes. Both EPA and Indiana Department of Environmental Management have performed a variety of cleanups at the location since the 2000’s.
