EPA to Hold Information Sessions on Cleanup of the Quanta Resources Superfund Site in Edgewater, N.J.
(New York, N.Y.) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency encourages the public to join us at next week’s “drop-in” style information sessions in Edgewater, N.J. to get the latest information on the start of the first phase of cleanup work at the Quanta Resources Superfund site.
The public may drop in at any time during either of the two information sessions that will be held from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.:

Representatives from the EPA and Honeywell, the party performing the cleanup under the EPA’s oversight, will be on hand to answer questions about the start of site cleanup and the plans in place to protect the health and safety of residents during cleanup.
The Quanta Resources Superfund site is being addressed in two phases. The first phase is cleanup of the land and groundwater. Coal tar in the ground will be solidified and contaminants in the groundwater will be removed by installing an underground barrier system. Metal sheet piling is currently being installed along the Hudson River shoreline. Next steps for this first phase of work include cleanup of coal tar beneath River Road and development of a plan to address high concentration arsenic areas at the site.
For the first phase of cleanup, an air monitoring plan has been developed to protect the community during cleanup. Honeywell, under the EPA’s oversight, is also working with the City of Edgewater to minimize potential noise or traffic issues.
Cleanup of river water and contaminated sediment will be addressed in the second phase of cleanup in the future following selection of a cleanup plan.
