EPA completes this year’s cleanup work at American Lead Site, Indianapolis, Ind.

CHICAGO (December 14, 2016) --U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that Superfund cleanup work will be suspended for the winter months at the American Lead Site in the historic Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood of Indianapolis. Cleanup operations are expected to resume in April 2017, weather permitting.

Since cleanup began on Sept. 15, EPA has made significant progress removing lead-contaminated soil in the neighborhood and from a nearby daycare center and playground. This year, the agency:  

  • sampled 134 properties,

  • identified 45 properties eligible for cleanup,

  • removed lead-contaminated soil from 28 properties, and

  • removed nearly 9,000 tons of lead-contaminated soil from the neighborhood.
