CHICAGO (Oct. 12, 2017)U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced an estimated $7.6 million cleanup plan for the Wisconsin Public Service Corp. Marinette Manufactured Gas Plant Superfund site in Marinette, Wis. The recently signed “record of decision” is for the cleanup that includes excavation and disposal of contaminated soil; on-site treatment of contaminated groundwater, monitoring, and restricted use of soil, groundwater, and sediment until cleanup goals are met. EPA is currently negotiating with WPSC for the company to design and implement the cleanup under EPA oversight.

WPSC owned and operated the gas plant from around 1910 to 1960 in a historically industrial area. The plant carbonized coal and carbureted water to form gas used for heat and light. Currently, the site is owned by the city of Marinette and the property houses the city's wastewater treatment plant and public boat launch.
