EPA adds Indianapolis site to Superfund National Priorities List
CHICAGO (Sept. 7. 2016)--U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today added the West Vermont Drinking Water Contamination site in Indianapolis, Ind., to the National Priorities List of Superfund sites. Superfund is the federal program that investigates and cleans up the nation’s most complex uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites.
Since 2009, EPA, Indiana Department of Environmental Management and Marion County Public Health Department have been working in a mixed residential/commercial neighborhood on the city's west side to clean up an 18-acre plume of groundwater contaminated with organic solvents. In 2015, EPA connected nearby homes and properties to city water after finding high levels of vinyl chloride in residential drinking water wells. The contaminated plume still has the potential to move toward additional residential wells and two municipal well fields which serve more than 18,000 residents.
EPA is also assessing whether vapors from the contaminated groundwater are seeping into homes and properties.
