BOSTON – EPA is awarding a total of $1,184,000 in Brownfield Assessment and Cleanup Grant dollars to municipalities and organizations across the state of Connecticut. Additionally, EPA has awarded a Connecticut entity with a Brownfields Job Training Grant providing funds to operate environmental job training programs that advance environmental justice by providing opportunities for residents living in areas impacted by contaminated lands.

The grants, funded by EPA's Brownfields Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup grant program, provide communities with the funding they need to assess, clean up and redevelop contaminated properties, boost local economies and leverage jobs while protecting public health and the environment.

In New England, since the beginning of the Brownfields program, EPA has awarded 374 assessment grants totaling $99.1 million, 73 revolving loan fund grants and supplemental funding totaling $90 million and 261 cleanup grants totaling $66.7 million. These grant funds have paved the way for more than $1.4 billion in public and private cleanup and redevelopment investment and for nearly 8,859 jobs in assessment, cleanup, construction and redevelopment. These investments and jobs target local, under-served and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods - places where environmental cleanups and new jobs are most needed.

In New England, the following Brownfields grants are being awarded this year:

Connecticut Cleanup and Assessment Grants:

  • Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments - $400,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant
  • City of Shelton - $200,000 Brownfields Cleanup Grant
  • City of Norwich - $384,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant

Connecticut Job Training Grant

Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board, Waterbury, Conn. - $200,000 Job Training Grant

EPA has selected the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board for an Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training grant. The Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board plans to train 42 students and place at least 40 graduates in environmental jobs. The core training program includes 200 hours of instruction. Participants who complete the training will earn four state certifications and five federal certifications. The Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board is targeting unemployed and underemployed residents of Waterbury, Connecticut.

"EPA is proud to invest Brownfields dollars to cleanup and revitalize contaminated sites across Connecticut. This work helps create jobs, and can be the catalyst to create new businesses or village centers, all while making our environment cleaner and the community healthier," said Curt Spalding, regional administrator of EPA New England's office. "This is just one way EPA works to make a difference in communities all across New England."

"Revitalizing old brownfield sites - turning eyesores and potential public health dangers into job creators and economic growth - is a positive investment for communities like Waterbury, Norwich and Shelton. In these communities - still struggling with old manufacturing plant legacies - these brownfields grants will encourage development and enable businesses to create jobs on these properties," said U.S. Senator Blumenthal.
