IDENTIFICATION INFORMATION CITATION Publication Date:1995 Title:Conterminous U.S. Land Cover Characteristics Data Set 1990 Prototype Edition:Version 2 Geospatial Data Presentation Form:Thematic Image Publication Information Publication Place:Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA Publisher:U.S. Geological Survey DESCRIPTION Abstract: The Conterminous U.S. Land Cover Characteristics Data Set 1990 Prototype on CD-ROM was developed by the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and the Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. This land characterization data set incorporates a collection of land surface attributes that define 159 seasonally distinct regions of the United States at 1-km resolution. Image analysis of eight bands of AVHRR 28-day maximum normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) composite data (March 16 through October 25, 1990) initially identified 70 classes. The evaluation of these classes was based on their spatial distribution, specific phenological characteristics, and association with ancillary data. In cases where preliminary classes were not uniquely associated with land-cover types, ancillary data were used to stratify and refine the regions. The final characterization of the resulting 159 land-cover regions was completed by developing descriptive and quantitative attribute tables from ancillary land data sets. The CD-ROM contains the source data used in the development of the data set, the preliminary classifications of the regions, the final classifications of the regions, the attribute tables, and several derivative thematic data sets.
