Estimates of new job creation generally apply to a period of 1-5 years following the new location or expansion; therefore, new jobs listed in this summary would be created by 2004. Development/Growth, By State in MAIA: VIRGINIA 1. Southwest 1. High population growth in Craig (11.7%), Bedford (22.7%), Botetourt (14.3%) and Franklin (12.6%) counties. 2. Washington County - 550 new jobs among three manufacturing facilities: 21st Century Containers (Abingdon; expansion), Bristol Compressors (Bristol area; expansion), Southern Engineering (Abingdon; new steel manufacturing plant); Washington county has also experienced some population growth (7.2%). Dickenson County (Clintwood) - 550 new jobs at new Nexus Communications call center; however, population has decreased 4.1% and unemployment was 16.2% in 1994. 6. Smyth County - 500 new jobs among three facilities: Svedala Industri AB (new construction and mining equipment manufacturing facility; Saltville), Vaughan- Basset Manufacturing (expansion of wood furniture manufacturer; Atkins), Marley Mouldings, Inc. (expansion; Hwy. 11 in Marion); unemployment 9.4% in 1994 7. Tazewell County - 350 new jobs among three facilities in Tazewell area: Innovative Design Machine, Inc. (new tire manufacturing plant on Rt. 460), SpanDeck (new crane manufacturing plant), Acken Signs Inc. (new sign manufacturing plant) 8. Wythe County - 100 new jobs at new Kingston-Warren Corp. rubber compounding facility (used Wytheville for map) 9. Pulaski County (Pulaski) - 1300 new jobs in Volvo Trucks assembly plant expansion; ***Probable new 1000 acre commerce park in Pulaski, designed to attract large high-tech industries (e.g., semi-conductor manufacturing); predicted to create directly at least 2000 new jobs.*** 10. For 2000-2010, the counties with the highest projected job growth include St. Mary's (17.6%), Frederick (16.0%), Calvert (15.7%), Charles (15.0%) and Queen Anne's (15.0%). These counties are in the Poconos region this growth includes retirees, vacation/second homes, and commuters to the New York City/Northern New Jersey area 67. According to Mike Rimer of the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission in Harrisburg, growth in Perry County is concentrated along U.S. 11/15 heading north out of Cumberland County. Growth in Cumberland County is concentated along U.S. 15 (Yellow Breeches Creek is threatened) and near I-76 and I-81 toward Carlisle (Conodoguinet Creek is threatened) 75.
