EMAP Indicators and the EPA Reports on the Environment

EPA’s Report on the Environment is intended to answer important questions about the current status and trends in the condition of air, water, land, human health, and ecological systems. Because the Report is used not only to communicate with the public, but also to support and inform strategic planning within the Agency, it is based on indicators that meet high standards for utility, objectivity, data quality, comparability, and representativeness. Indicators based on probability sampling and consistent, high quality field measurements meet those standards – 19 of the 86 indicators in the latest edition of the Report, currently under Science Advisory Board review, are derived from or influenced by EMAP projects.
