Advection

Ground water contaminants move in part because the ground water is moving. In many cases advection is among most important factors determining the rate of contaminant transport. The advective terms in the transport equation are

Calculator icon The seepage velocity and travel time calculator estimates the rate of advective travel and the associated travel time. Since sorption plays an inportant role in slowing the advective velocity of a contaminant, the calculator incluse the retardation factor (which is described on later pages).

The travel time calculation is limited, however, because dispersion also has a role to play. Dispersion causes some of the contaminants to arrive sooner and some to arrive later than determined by advection alone.
