The stability of plumes depends on the balance between factors causing expansion or contraction of the plume.
Generally the plume expands because of
- release of mass from the source, and
- transport in the aquifer.
Expansion is limited by
- biodegradation,
- volatilization, and
- other factors (including remediation).
