AN EPA URBAN WATERS GRANT WILL HELP RESTORE BELLEMEADE CREEK AND REVITALIZE RICHMOND’S BELLEMEADE COMMUNITY
On Sept. 7, EPA announced the award of a nearly $60,000 EPA urban waters grant to the City of Richmond, Va., for its Bellemeade community. The funding will help create a watershed coalition to restore Bellemeade Creek and revitalize the health and environment of the community. EPA’s Urban Waters program helps cities improve their waterways and environment to serve the needs of their communities. GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE WINS AWARD FOR SUCCESSFULLY MANAGING THE SAFE USE AND DISPOSAL OF ELECTRONICS BY FEDERAL AGENCIES
On Sept. 4, Daniel Gallo, a resident of Brookhaven, Pa., was one of only 10 EPA employees honored nationwide for helping federal agencies protect the environment. By purchasing only energy-efficient electronic equipment, Gallo’s efforts helped save $7.8 million and cut greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking 6,000 passenger cars off the road for one year. The toxic materials were also not allowed to contaminate the environment when dismantled or discarded.
REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR EPA’S CAMPUS RAINWORKS DESIGN CHALLENGE COMPETITION
On Sept. 5, EPA opened registration for students from colleges and universities across the nation to participate in its new design competition. Student teams, working with a faculty advisor, may submit competitive design plans for a proposed campus green infrastructure project that develops innovative stormwater management approaches. Registration is open from Sept. 4 to Oct. 5, and entries must be submitted by Dec. 14 for consideration. EPA TO STOP IMPORTATION OF TOXIC SHORT-CHAIN CHLORINATED PARAFFINS IN PROPOSED SETTLEMENT
On Aug. 22, EPA announced a settlement with a firm based in Wilmington, Del., to resolve violations of the Toxic Substances Control Act. The proposed settlement ends the importation of short-chained chlorinated paraffins (SCCPS) that are used as metal work lubricants/coolants, and plasticizers and flame retardants all considered toxic to aquatic life. EPA PROPOSES AIR PERMIT FOR CAPITOL POWER PLANT TO CONVERT TO NATURAL GAS
EPA is seeking public comment on a proposed permit for the Capitol Power Plant in Washington, D.C. to install two natural gas fired co-generation units to provide steam and electricity to the Capitol and nearby buildings by replacing coal as its main source of energy. The proposed permit is subject to public comment beginning Aug. 29, concluding with a public hearing on Oct. 1. A copy of the draft permit is available online at https://www.epa.gov/reg3artd/.
EPA AWARDS $15 MILLION TO ASSIST SMALL DRINKING WATER AND WASTEWATER SYSTEMS IMPROVE THEIR OPERATIONS
On Sept. 6, EPA awarded $15 million to provide training and technical assistance to small drinking and wastewater systems serving fewer than 10,000 people and to private well owners. The training and technical assistance will help the small public water systems achieve and maintain compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and meet the challenges of aging infrastructure, financial and management limitations, and high staff turnover.
