NEW WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM TO CLEANUP TCE-CONTAMINATED GROUNDWATER AT CROSSLEY FARM SUPERFUND SITE IN HEREFORD TOWNSHIP, PA
On July 10, EPA Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin announced the opening of a new water treatment system at their Crossley Farm Superfund site. DELAWARE OCEAN BEACHES RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENT WATER QUALITY
At a July 3 press event, EPA Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin, U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons, Governor Jack Markell, and others recognized Delaware's beaches for their outstanding water quality and beach nourishment projects. For more information, visit: Beaches.
EPA AWARDS $200,000 BROWNFIELDS GRANT TO CLEANUP LONG-ABANDONED POTTERY SITE IN CHESTER, W. VA
On July 11, EPA awarded a $200,000 brownfields grant to the Business Development Corporation of the Northern Panhandle to cleanup and support planning at the former Taylor, Smith and Taylor (TSandT) Pottery site. CLEAN AIR ACT REQUIREMENTS FOR GREENHOUSE GAS PERMITTING PROCESS STREAMLINED
On July 3, EPA announced a final rule to implement Clean Air Act greenhouse gas permitting and thresholds for new and existing industrial facilities. The requirements will focus on curtailing air pollution from large emitting power plants. Smaller facilities are not covered at this time. EPA PROVIDES $950,000 FOR GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENT ASSISTANCE IN 17 COMMUNITIES NATIONWIDE; PITTSBURGH AMONG THESE
On July 19, EPA announced granting $950,000 in targeted technical assistance to help 17 communities increase their use of green infrastructure to manage stormwater and restore urban waters. Pittsburgh, Pa. is using $75,000 to evaluate the costs and benefits of green infrastructure for wet weather planning for the City and 82 suburban municipalities. SUMMER PROGRAM TEACHES STUDENTS HOW TO TACKLE ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION IN THEIR COMMUNITIES
The EPA Region 3 Student Environmental Development Program (SEDP) is now underway at three locations: Center City Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Md. This seven-week summer environmental education and leadership program for selected Middle School students teaches various environmental topics and life skills and has a proven track record for increasing environmental awareness and stewardship to inner-city youth. TWO EPA SCIENTISTS RECEIVE PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS FOR ADVANCING ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
On July 23, two EPA scientists were awarded the 2012 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Dr. Mehdi Hazari's work demonstrates that inhaling low levels of air pollutants could increase susceptibility to cardiac events. Mr. Adam Eisele's work identifies community health risks due to air pollution, and developed a mobile measurement device to remotely assess oil and gas production emission sources.
