EPA LAUNCHES ROAD TRIPS NATIONWIDE TO PROMOTE WATERSENSE AND SAVE CONSUMERS MONEY AND WATER

EPA's WaterSense program and its partner American Water launched a national campaign "We're for Water" that includes cross country road trips to encourage Americans to save water, and educate consumers about WaterSense labeled products. The We're for Water team will promote events in Williamsburg, Va. (July 28), Washington, D.C. (July 29) and Philadelphia, Pa. (July 29) in Region 3 in addition to many other locations. WaterSense products use about 20 percent less water than standard models, and in 2009 helped consumers save more than 36 billion gallons of water and $267 million on their water and sewer bills. DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING PROPOSALS FOR BROWNFIELDS CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS EXTENDED TO JULY 30, 2010

The 14th National Brownfields Conference (Brownfields 2011) to be held April 3-5, 2011 in Philadelphia, Pa. has extended its deadline for proposals (full sessions, short presentations, and poster gallery ideas) until July 30, 2010. Topics should fall under these categories: Community Engagement and Environmental Justice, Green Jobs, Green Technology and Emerging Solutions, Planning for Community Revitalization, Sustainability, the Path Forward, and the Business of Brownfields. EPA PROPOSES RULE TO FURTHER REDUCE FINE PARTICLE AND OZONE POLLUTION FROM 31 EASTERN STATES AND D.C.

EPA's newly announced Transport Rule proposes to significantly reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) from power plants in the eastern U.S. that cross state lines and are linked to illnesses and premature deaths. By 2014, the rule would help reduce power plant SO2 emissions by 71 percent, and power plant NOx emissions by 52 percent. EPA will take public comment on the proposal for 60 days after the rule is published in the Federal Register. Public hearings will be announced shortly. The proposed rulemaking, planned to be finalized in June 2011, is available at www.epa.gov/airtransport .

EPA RELEASES TIPS, RECOMMENDS TOOLS TO HELP AVOID HARMFUL OVEREXPOSURE TO SUN

EPA's SunWise program provides tips and tools to protect people from overexposure to the sun which can cause skin cancer and eye problems. EPA has launched an application for smartphones giving users access to the daily UV index forecast in their areas to help plan outdoor activities. A fact sheet intended for older adults and their caregivers helps protect against age-related macular degeneration and skin cancer. EPA IS STILL ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM UNTIL JULY 26

Solicitations are still open to apply for EPA's National Environmental Education Training Program to support the environmental education training of K-12 teachers, faculty at colleges and universities and non-formal educators across the nation. The grants will provide necessary funding to qualified applicants so they can more effectively teach about important environmental issues. The deadline to apply is July 26.

SUMMER STUDENTS BUSY THIS SUMMER LEARNING TO TACKLE POLLUTION PROBLEMS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES

The Student Environmental Development Program (SEDP) is an EPA Region 3 summer environmental education and leadership program for selected Middle School students (ranging in age from 12-14) from diverse racial, economic, and cultural backgrounds. Every summer students spend seven weeks at three locations: EPA Region 3 headquarters in Center City Philadelphia, on the campus of George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and in Wilmington, Del. where they are taught by science teachers and by EPA employees and local professionals.
