HINTS ON TRAVELLING “GREEN” THIS SUMMER

During this summer vacation, EPA recommends you look for hotels that have earned EPA’s Energy Star label because they use less energy and emit less greenhouse gas emissions. As hotel guests, you can also save energy. When leaving a room, turn off the lights and TV; set the energy-saving setting; unplug electronics when not in use; open curtains to use daylight when possible; and re-use linens to save both water and energy. SIMPLE STEPS HELP PROTECT AGAINST SKIN CANCER THIS SUMMER

EPA is urging you to protect yourselves from ultraviolet radiation this summer to prevent skin cancer. Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, has become one of the most common among young adults ages 15 to 29, and more skin cancer cases will be diagnosed this year than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined. Reduce your overexposure to UV rays: slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen (SPF 15+), slap on a wide-brimmed hat, wrap on sunglasses, and seek shade during midday hours. THIS WEEK’S HEALTHY WATERS BLOG INVITES COMMENTS ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY WATERSHED

This week's Healthy Waters blog is requesting feedback on Chesapeake Bay watershed pollution reduction efforts. A webinar on June 7 at 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM offers a preview of upcoming developments as well as information on the Bay TMDL (pollution diet). EPA EXPECTS CERTIFICATION PROGRAM WILL IMPROVE ELECTRONIC RECYCLING PRACTICES

The Responsible Recycling (R2) Practices for Use in Accredited Certification Programs (PDF) is a set of guidelines and practices for recyclers to follow when disassembling or reclaiming used electronics equipment including those for export. EPA expects that widespread certification will improve electronics recycling practices and provide the public with the confidence that their electronics will be handled in a way that protects the environment, and the health and safety of workers from the release of toxic substances inherent in electronic waste.

BROWNFIELDS 2011 EDUCATIONAL PROPOSALS DUE JULY 2

EPA is soliciting proposals for educational sessions on Brownfields redevelopment (full sessions, short presentations, and poster gallery ideas) for the upcoming 14th National Brownfields Conference on April 3-5, 2011. The deadline is July 2. Categories include green jobs, community engagement/environmental justice, the business of brownfields, green technology, community revitalization, and sustainability.
