EPA OFFERS FREE WEBCAST TRAINING TO CELEBRATE AMERICAN WETLANDS MONTH

EPA is offering a Watershed Academy webcast: "Tools for Protecting Coastal Wetlands" on Tues. May 4th at 1-3 pm Eastern. Anyone interested in gaining information and training on coastal wetland protection and restoration can take part in these lectures by watershed management experts. Completing 15 modules will not only earn the Watershed Academy Web Training Certificate, but for some, count towards college credit. FORUM EXPLORES RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO HISPANIC AND ASIAN COMMUNITIES IN PHILADELPHIA

A "Beyond Translation" program forum took place on April 6, at Temple University, sponsored by the EPA Region 3's Hispanic and Asian employee organizations, Temple University, and the Pa. Horticultural Society. The EPA outreach seeks to make minorities more aware of their communities' environmental issues and the resources available so that small, minority businesses can pursue "greening" through grants, partnerships, and networks. CONFERENCE REVIEWS COMPOSTING IN THE DELAWARE VALLEY

The Compost Matters conference took place in Philadelphia on April 9, with funds from EPA and the William Penn Foundation. Discussions included: Food Composting Projects in Pa., Wilmington Organic Recycling Center: the Region's Largest Composting Facility, and From Kitchen to Farm—A Composting Partnership. Composting's benefits are many including enriching soil, diverting waste from landfills, remediating contaminated soil and preventing pollution. EPA, DOE BOLSTER ENERGY STAR PROGRAM; ISSUE NEW GUIDELINES FOR ENERGY STAR HOMES

EPA and the Department of Energy jointly announced tightening the Energy Star product certification and verification process to bolster the standards, testing and enforcement aspects of the Energy Star program. The EPA and DOE will continue to strengthen and improve the program, and to help consumers identify the most energy efficient products on the market that save money and reduce carbon pollution. Effective January 2011, EPA has announced new, more rigorous guidelines for new Energy Star label homes which will slash utility bills for new qualified homes by 15 percent, and make these homes at least 20 percent more efficient than homes built under the previous 2009 International Energy Conservation Code. Builders may adopt the new requirements earlier than January 2011. For more information on the new guidelines, go to http://www.energystar.gov

EPA VIDEO CONTEST PROMOTES IMPORTANCE OF RULEMAKING

The general public is invited to enter EPA's Rulemaking Matters! video contest to explain why federal regulations are beneficial and important. Participants must submit a 60 to 90 second video by May 17 to be posted on YouTube, which must include the slogan "Let your voice be heard," and must direct viewers to the www.Regulations.gov website. The winner will be awarded $2,500, and the winning video posted on government websites to promote the regulatory process. For more information, go to https://www.epa.gov/lawsregs/videocontest
