EPA Goal 2: Protecting America’s Waters |
Purpose
NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service Sustainable Fisheries Division is entrusted with the
conservation, management, and protection of marine fishery resources inhabiting waters off the
southeastern United States. Within this Division is the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic/Caribbean
Fisheries Operations Teams. The chief responsibility of the Teams is to assist
three regional fishery management councils within the National Marine Fisheries
Service Southeast Region. The Teams working with the councils prepare fishery
management plans for marine finfish and crustacea that support important commercial
and recreational fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico, south Atlantic Ocean, and
Caribbean Sea. Other activities include:
- provide guidance in determining which fisheries should be managed, or which ones
should have revised management plans.
- provide councils with technical assistance and advice in preparing the
management plans.
