EPA Goal 2: Protecting America’s Waters |
Purpose
The Department of Interior - U.S. Geological Survey - National Water Quality
Assessment Program (NAWQA) was implemented in 1991 to develop long-term
consistent and comparable information on streams, rivers, ground water,
and aquatic systems in support of national, regional, State, and local
information needs and decisions related to water-quality management
and policy. One of NAWQA’s primary activities includes national assessments
of source water and drinking water associated with domestic wells,
and with drinking-water supply wells, stream intakes, and finished
water associated with community water systems across the Nation.

Drinking Water Programs:
This program comprises the multiple-barrier approach to protecting public health from unsafe drinking water. Under this approach,
the Agency protects public health through: source water assessment and protection programs; promulgation of new or revised, scientifically
sound and risk-based National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWRs); training, technical assistance and financial
assistance programs to enhance systems’ capacity to comply with existing and new regulations; and the national implementation
of NPDWRs by state and tribal drinking water programs through regulatory, non-regulatory and voluntary programs and policies
to ensure safe drinking water.
Authorizing Legislation
• Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA)
• Clean Water Act (CWA)
