Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry Brownfield/Land Reuse Initiative

Purpose
Community health is an important part of land revitalization. ATSDR works to include health considerations in brownfield redevelopment and land reuse.

ATSDR’s Brownfield / Land Reuse Initiative promotes health, community involvement, partnerships, communication and education.

Brownfields:
Brownfields are defined as real properties, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse, which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. (There is some statutory exclusion to this definition). The Brownfields Program is designed to empower states, Tribes, local communities, and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together to prevent, assess, safely cleanup, and reuse Brownfields.
