Midwest Clean Diesel Initiative: FY07 MCDI and CSB Grants
EPA has awarded funds to 9 Midwest Clean Diesel and Clean School Bus grant applicants. The grants were awarded through FY07 MCDI and CSB funds. Below are synopses of each grant and the awarded grant amounts.
FY07 Midwest Clean Diesel Initiative Grants ($231,592):
- Cook County, Illinois: Cook County will reduce emissions of carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter from 30 County-owned diesel engines by installing 26 diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC’s) and 4 diesel particulate filters (DPF’s), all EPA verified. In addition, Cook County will initiate an aggressive public awareness campaign targeting County employees and the general public. EPA has awarded Cook County $103,297.
- City of Chicago: The City of Chicago Clean Diesel Project’s goals are to demonstrate the effectiveness of idling reduction technology on diesel engines, reduce the amount of air pollution emitted by the City of Chicago’s fleet, conserve fuel resources, and reduce costs associated with wasted fuel and accelerated wear and tear on vehicles cause by excessive idling. The City will install diesel-fired engine coolant heaters on 13 heavy-duty refuse trucks that are utilized daily for residential refuse disposal by the City’s Department of Streets and Sanitation. EPA has awarded the City of Chicago $51,840.
- Minnesota Environmental Initiative (MEI): MEI will retrofit four 350-450 horsepower 1996-2001 model year wheel loaders and provide an EPA verified engine upgrade system on a 1994 350 horsepower wheel loader. The project will also install timer module engine idle reduction equipment on the four retrofitted wheel loaders. EPA has awarded MEI $76,455.
FY07 Clean School Bus Grants ($689,701):
- American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest: EPA is providing funding to assist the American Lung Association in retrofitting 15 school buses with idle reduction equipment in Illinois. The equipment provided through this grant are expected to reduce 2,029 school children's daily exposure to potentially harmful particulate matter and other pollutants emitted from diesel school bus engines. EPA has awarded the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest $67,924.
- Canton Local School District (Ohio): Through this project, the Canton Local School District (CLSD) will purchase 9 DPF’s, 15 DOC’s, 24 closed crank case filtration systems, and two bus replacements. CLSD will educate its drivers of the importance of reducing emissions and idling through in-service training and bulletin board notices. CLSD will also highlight its efforts in the school newsletter. EPA has awarded Canton Local School District $154,848
- Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Laker School District (Michigan): EPA will provide assistance to Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Laker School District for the purpose of modernizing their school bus fleets. This funding will allow the District to retrofit 19 buses with EPA and/or CARB verified DOC’s, and also move the fleet from B2 to B20 biodiesel. EPA has awarded Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Laker School District $59,120.
- Hamilton County Board of County Commissioners(Ohio): This project will replace 3 pre-1990 model year school buses with newer, cleaner buses and retrofit 60 1997-2003 model year school buses with DOC’s and closed crankcase ventilation systems. Six school districts will partner with Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services and Duke Energy to accomplish this task. EPA has awarded the Hamilton County Board of County Comissioners $118,000.
- Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton Schools (Wisconsin): This project will provide funding to assist the Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton School District in retrofitting 9 school buses with DOC’s and closed crankcase filtration systems, employ idle reduction technologies on 10 buses, and replace one bus with a new, less polluting bus. The project will also include education of staff and the public on the importance of clean air practices. EPA has awarded Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton schools $86,353.
- St. Clair Regional Education Service Agency (Michigan): The St. Clair Regional Education Service Agency's project will allow area school districts to retrofit 183 buses with EPA and/or CARB verified DOC’s, using cleaner fuels, and/or relacing older school buses with new, cleaner models. EPA has awarded the St. Clair Regional Education Service Agency $166,185
- Manitowoc Public School District (Wisconsin): The Manitowoc Public School District will retrofit 14 school buses with Webasto heaters. The heating units will reduce idling time on these buses, which will reduce diesel emissions. The buses already have diesel emission reduction equipment and burn low-sulfur diesel fuel. In addition, the buses will be getting crankcase filtration systems funded by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. EPA has awarded the Manitowoc Public School District $37,271.
