WasteWise: Resource
Management
Unlike traditional solid waste service contracts, resource management (RM)
compensates waste contractors based on performance in achieving your organization's
waste reduction goals rather than the volume of waste disposed. As a result,
RM aligns waste contractor incentives with your own goals as you both explore
innovative approaches that foster cost-effective resource efficiency through
prevention, recycling, and recovery.
EPA's Comprehensive Procurement
Guidelines (CPG)
This Web site promotes the procurement of products made with recycled-content
materials. It provides information on CPG and EPA's Recovered Materials Advisory
Notices, which recommend recycled-content levels for CPG items. This site
also contains a list of manufacturers, vendors, and suppliers of designated
products; fact sheets; buy-recycled news; and related links.
EPA's Environmentally Preferable
Products Program
Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) is a federal-wide program that
encourages and assists Executive agencies in the purchasing of environmentally
preferable products and services. This Web site contains guidance and tools
for initiating an EPP program, case studies, a list of resources and upcoming
events, and an open forum to encourage discussions of EPP issues.
EnergySTAR
for Manufacturers
This Web site provides resources and interactive tools to determine your current
energy and financial performance and estimate your potential for improvement.
EPA's Green Buildings
Website
This Web site offers information on green building materials, water and energy
conservation, and sustainable development.
EPA's Life-Cycle
Assessment Website
This Web site's purpose is to promote the use of Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA)
to make more informed decisions through a better understanding of the human
health and environmental impacts of products, processes, and activities. LCA
provides a framework for identifying and evaluating environmental burdens
associated with the life cycles of materials and services in a "cradle-to-grave"
approach.
EPA's
Acid Rain Program
The overall goal of EPA's Acid Rain Program is to achieve significant environmental
and public health benefits through reductions in emissions of sulfur dioxide
(SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), the primary causes of acid rain. This Web
site presents both traditional and innovative, market-based approaches for
controlling air pollution. The site also provides links to information on
emissions trading, climate change, energy efficiency, and pollution prevention.
EPA's Climate Change
Website
This Web site focuses on the science and impacts of climate change and on
actions by governments, corporations, and individuals that help address climate
change issues. The site also features emissions information, U.S. policy initiatives,
frequent questions, related news, publications, and reports.
P2Rx
Topic Hub for Electric Utilities
This primer, presented by the Southwest Pollution Prevention Center, is intended
as a quick guide to essential pollution prevention information on electric
utilities, as well as a compilation of pertinent on-line resources.
P2Rx
Topic Hub for Gas and Oil
This primer, presented by the Southwest Pollution Prevention Center, is intended
as a quick guide to the essential pollution prevention information on gas
and oil, as well as a compilation of pertinent on-line resources.
Pollution
Prevention Opportunities for Electric Utilities
Examples of existing P2 opportunities for the electric utility industry presented
by the Pollution Prevention Regional Information Center (P2RIC).
Energy Information
Administration Environmental Information for Electric Utilities
This Web site provides reports, publications, and other information pertaining
to environmental issues and the electric utilities industry.
Texas
Railroad Commission's Oil and Gas Waste Minimization Site
This Web site provides in-depth information regarding waste minimization in
the major operations of the oil and gas industry including waste minimization
in pipeline transportation operations. The site includes a downloadable software
tool to aid in waste minimization planning.
The Emissions
and Generation Resource Integrated Database
The Emissions and Generation Resource Integrated Database (E-GRID) is a comprehensive
source of data on the environmental characteristics of all electric power
generated in the United States. An integration of 23 different federal data
sources, E-GRID2000 provides information on air pollutant emissions and resource
mix for individual power plants, generating companies, states, and regions
of the power grid. The data are expressed in terms that allow direct comparison
of the environmental attributes of electricity generation at any level.
Electric Power Research Institute
The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is a non-profit energy research
consortium for the benefit of utility members and their customers. EPRI's
Environmental Division works to address strategic issues such as climate change,
regional challenges such as watershed management and protection, and facility-specific
needs such as multimedia emissions control. The environment and health section
of EPRI's Web site includes information on topics such as climate change,
groundwater protection, soil issues, and toxics characterizations.
American Public Power Association
The American Public Power Association (APPA) is the service organization for
the nation's nation's more than 2,000 community based, locally controlled,
not for profit electric utilities. The environmental
issues portion of the site includes information on current environmental
issues pertaining to the industry and access to APPA's environmental resource
center.
Energy Efficiency and Renewable
Energy Network
A comprehensive resource for DOE'S energy efficiency and renewable energy
information, plus access to more than 600 links and 80,000 documents.

Additional Information - EPA Partnership Programs for Utilities
National Waste Minimization
Program
EPA's Waste Minimization Program works with industrial organizations, government
agencies, and communities to find ways to help individual companies reduce
the amount of waste they generate, particularly if the wastes contain one
or more Waste Minimization Priority Chemicals.
Green Power Partnership
EPA's Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program designed to reduce the
environmental impact of electricity generation by promoting renewable energy.
Commercial, nonprofit, and public organizations can become partners by committing
to procure an amount of renewable energy that is proportional to their annual
electricity use. In return, EPA will provide a network of providers and partners,
technical information, and public recognition.
Combined Heat and Power Partnership
The Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Partnership is a voluntary program that
seeks to reduce the environmental impact of power generation by fostering
the use of CHP in the commercial, institutional, and industrial sectors.
SF6
Emission Reduction Partnership for Electric Power Systems
This program seeks to reduce emissions of sulfur hexafluoride from the electric
power industry. The partnership provides a forum for EPA and the electric
power industry to work together to reduce SF6 emissions to technically and
economically feasible levels, thereby helping to ameliorate global climate
change.
EPA's Natural Gas STAR Program
The Natural Gas STAR Program is a flexible, voluntary partnership between
EPA and the oil and natural gas industry. Through the program, EPA works with
production, processing, and transmission and distribution companies to identify
and promote the implementation of cost-effective technologies and practices
to reduce emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
