SUNWISE SCHOOL PROGRAM PILOT UNDERWAY

Through a national network of elementary schools, children will begin a pilot of the EPA SunWise School Program to enhance children’s understanding of ultraviolet radiation and stratospheric ozone depletion as well as the health risks that can result from overexposure to the sun. Schools will take daily measurements of actual ultraviolet radiation and report daily ultra-violet data on the SunWise Internet Learning Site. The program includes opportunities to enhance school sun-safety practices and involve the community through guest speakers and partnerships. The SunWise School Program is in its first pilot phase which will be refined during this year to prepare for the national launch of SunWise in 2000. SunWise is an EPA Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking (EMPACT) project that provides accurate, time-relevant environmental monitoring data in an ongoing and sustainable manner. For more information about EMPACT, see: https://www.epa.gov/empact.
