Denver -- Four wastewater treatment plants in Colorado and Wyoming were awarded for excellence in maintenance, operations and management by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Awards recognize the best run facilities from a six-state region including Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. The program was established in 1986 as part of a national effort to increase public awareness of the importance of efficient, effective wastewater treatment plants in protecting water quality and public health.

U.S. EPA Region 8 Operations & Maintenance Excellence award winners for 2001 are:

• 1st Place Advanced Treatment Plant Small : Pinery Water Reclamation Facility, located in Parker, Colorado. This system was also selected for the National EPA award.

• 2nd Place Advanced Treatment Plant Small: Southern Ute Indian Tribe Waste Water Treatment Facility, located in Ignacio, Colorado. This is the first Indian Tribe in EPA R8 to receive an O&M Excellence award.

• Advanced Treatment Plant Medium : City of Laramie Waste Water Treatment Plant, located in Laramie, Wyoming.

• Advanced Treatment Plant Large: Cities of Littleton/Englewood Wastewater Treatment Plant, located in Englewood, Colorado. This system was also selected for the National EPA award.
  
  "Treatment plants are critical to fighting water pollution," EPA O&M Awards Coordinator Anthony DeLoach said. "Since 1972 EPA and communities have spent billions of dollars on facilities to protect America's streams, lakes and groundwater. These award-winners exemplify the best in this investment to protecting water quality."
  
  EPA Drinking Water Chief Jack Rychecky will visit each of the facilities to present the awards at specially scheduled events.
