FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, JUNE 24, 1999
NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR PESTICIDE INERT DISCLOSURE WORKGROUP

EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) is inviting nominations for appointment to a new workgroup, the Inert Disclosure Stakeholder Workgroup, of the Pesticide Program Dialogue Committee (PPDC). The workgroup will advise the PPDC on ways to make information on pesticide inert ingredients more available to the public while working within the mandates of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and the related Confidential Business Information (CBI) concerns. Generally, for a given pesticide product, an “inert ingredient” is any ingredient in the product that is not “pesticidally” active, as opposed to an “active” ingredient, which is one that prevents, destroys, repels or mitigates a pest. The new workgroup will: review the current OPP policy; provide a forum for open discussions on the principles of disclosure (e.g., right-to-know) and the principles of CBI protection (e.g., substantial harm to a business’ competitive position in the market place); and examine options for alternative ways of disseminating inert ingredient information to the public. EPA intends to appoint workgroup members who represent a variety of public sectors. Potential candidates should submit by July 21 the following information: name, occupation, organization, position, address, telephone number and a brief resume containing their background, experience, qualifications and other relevant information as part of the consideration process to: Margie Fehrenbach, Designated Federal Officer for PPDC, Office of Pesticide Programs, OPPTS, 7501-C, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 401 M St., S.W., Washington, D.C. 20460.
