EPA Awards $600,000 to University of Missouri-Columbia

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., Sept. 4, 2008) - EPA has awarded $600,000 to the University of Missouri-Columbia for designing new technology to improve the detection of viruses, bacteria and chemicals in drinking water.

EPA Region 7 Administrator John Askew said, "Protecting our nation's drinking water is a top priority for EPA. We are proud to award the University of Missouri-Columbia with these funds, which will help to ensure safe drinking water."

The Agency presently regulates more than 90 harmful chemicals, microorganisms and other contaminants in drinking water. This research project will help improve the ability to quickly identify contaminants using new technologies and methods.

The Safe Drinking Water Act, signed into law Dec. 16, 1974, and strengthened by amendments in 1986 and 1996, protects human health by regulating the nation's public drinking water supply. The responsibility for ensuring safe drinking water is shared by EPA, states, tribes, water systems, and the public.
