On June 20, Andrew Bronson, wastewater utility division superintendent, City/Borough of Juneau, Alaska, was sentenced to six months home confinement and a $10,000 fine for violating the Clean Water Act (CWA) by tampering with effluent samples from Juneau’s Mendenhall treatment facility. Bronson admitted using tap water to dilute effluent samples intended for wastewater analysis. As a result, inaccurate levels were included in reports submitted to EPA as required by the CWA. Such tampering can make it difficult to determine if sewage treatment plants are discharging excessive levels of bacteria, pathogens and solids, which can be harmful to fish and other aquatic life and can make surface waters unsafe for recreation. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI with the assistance of EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Juneau.
